Goo project

This is a material investigation into the social and cultural perceptions of 'goo'. Goo is unique in its inability to be defined by science- it is a physical manifestation of various social and cultural values and beliefs. There are no formulas, ingredients or recipies that can claim to encompass ‘gooeyness’.

In its research, the project has amassed a large number of goos, some of which exist within leading scientific development, others that can be purchased from most joke shops. It examines how these materials relate to each other both in their physical properties but also in their social and cultural worth.

Whether it be silly putty, or human tissue cultures, or self-replicating grey goo, all of these substances have emotive qualities. If we are moving into an increasingly biological future, as many predict we are, then inevitably things are going to get.. well, quite gooey. How will we cope with this increasingly likely aesthetic?

The project analyses, tests and collaborates to not only examine exisiting goo's, but speculates about the kinds of substances that might emerge in the not so distant future.
